2019 NPWW 'It Starts Here'

National Public Works Week

May 19-25, 2019

APWA is proud to announce “It Starts Here” as the theme for the 2019 National Public Works Week. This theme represents the many facets of modern civilization that grow out of the efforts put forth by the public works professionals across North America. What starts here? Infrastructure starts with public works... Growth and innovation starts with public works... Mobility starts with public works... Security starts with public works... Healthy communities start with public works... The bottom line is that citizens' quality of life starts with public works.

National Public Works Week Awards Contest

Since 1960, the third week in May has been celebrated as National Public Works Week (NPWW). Across North America, the more than 30,000 members of APWA/CPWA in the United States and Canada use this week to energize and educate the public on the importance of public works to their daily lives: planning, building, managing and operating at the heart of their local communities to improve everyday quality of life.

Each year CPWA hosts an awards contest to recognize municipalities in Canada for their NPWW programs and events and all communities are invited to submit their activities. A panel of CPWA evaluators chooses winning entries based on criteria that include public outreach, education, staff involvement, political involvement, events held and creativity. Any municipality in Canada is eligible for nomination. The 2019 award categories:
  • First Time Entry: Any community submitting for the first time.
  • Community under 10,000: Any community with a population under 10,000.
  • Community of 10,000 to 29,999: Any community with a population of 10,000 to 29,000.
  • Community of 30,000 to 99,999: Any community with a population of 30,000 to 99,000.
  • Community of 100,000 or more: Any community with a population of 100,000 or more.

Winners of the 2019 contest will be announced Monday, September 9, 2019 at the CPWA Luncheon held in conjunction with the 2019 Public Works Expo (PWX) in Seattle, WA and in APWA publications.
